Gleb Yushin is a Professor at the School of Materials and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research group has developing nano-scale synthesis strategies to bypass macro-scale limitations of energy and structural materials with applications in clean tech, electric vehicles, wearable electronics, and more. It develops of novel processing techniques to substantially improve in the conductivity of solid electrolytes to enable and improve high energy density battery technologies. Its research projects are focused on gaining fundamental understanding of the impacts of chemistry, microstructure and composition on physical properties, electrochemical stability, metal ion diffusion and sensitivity to environment in several classes of solid state electrolytes. In the laboratory of Prof. Yushin, a highly innovative approach of nanomaterial synthesis based on the strain energy minimization at the boundary of the phase transformation front was discovered. Such an approach allowed developing cheap and environmentally friendly synthesis of flexible alumina nanowires and nanowire-based separator membranes for safer Li-ion batteries. Laboratory of Prof. Yushin is conducting fundamental studies of the interactions of conversion-type active materials with electrolyte components and additionally exploring approaches to overcome the known shortcomings observed in conversion-type electrodes.

The LIMOS (Laboratoire d'Informatique, de Mod��lisation et d'Optimisation des Syst��mes) and the CERDI (Centre d��Etudes et de Recherches sur le D��veloppement International) are seeking a researcher who has recently defended or should be very close to finishing a PhD in Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on Artificial Intelligence for Good and Disaster Science in the scope of the DLISCES project.

The candidate should possess strong skills in deep learning and machine learning, specifically with applications in computer vision. Ideal qualifications include solid experience in manipulating and analyzing satellite images using deep learning models. Additionally, a keen interest in collaborating with scholars in economics and management within the context of disaster risk reduction is essential. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to conduct high-level research for publication in international peer-reviewed conferences and journals. Proficiency in either English or French is required.

The candidate will join the LIMOS and collaborate closely with the CERDI.

The LIMOS is the Laboratory of Informatics, Modelling, and Optimization of Systems in Clermont-Ferrand and comprises over 240 scholars specializing in computing and more generally in sciences and technologies of information and communication. A significant portion of the LIMOS research focuses on artificial intelligence and data science, encompassing deep learning, machine learning, computer vision, computer geometry, time series analysis, and knowledge representation. Research applications span diverse areas such as the environment, health, smart transport, and industry 4.0. The candidate will be immersed in a vibrant scientific environment dedicated to artificial intelligence.

The CERDI is recognized as a leading institution in research dedicated to international development economics. A research program has existed for several years at the CERDI on sustainable development issues embedding risk economics, natural resources and environmental economics. The candidate should also benefit from the stimulating environment of the CERDI, which hosts many doctorate, post-doctorate and tenure researchers.

Research Project Description

The project contributes to the study of the complex interactions between societies and natural disasters, in particular in developing countries and the path between research and political decision-making, which is the objective of the International Research Center of Disaster Science and Sustainable Development of the University Clermont Auvergne that funds the DLISCES project.

To define policies aimed at reducing the risk associated with natural disasters within a territory exposed to climate-related hazards, it is crucial to have comprehensive and robust maps of indicators assessing various dimensions of vulnerability. However, the conventional construction of vulnerability indicators is partial and relies on economic and social data gathered through household surveys. Field surveys are time and resource-intensive and are often scarce, especially in Southern countries. This lack of spatial and temporal information hampers the accurate modeling and understanding of vulnerabilities related to the population, housing, and infrastructure in the face of climate risk.

In this context, the DLISCES project seeks to leverage deep learning and machine learning techniques to analyze readily available satellite images (e.g., Copernicus data) in conjunction with socio-economic data (e.g., LSMS data) and/or environmental data. The goal is to estimate human and material vulnerability indicators across an entire territory. Advanced artificial intelligence methods can significantly contribute to sustainability science and natural risk management by effectively combining unstructured, heterogeneous, and massive data to infer complex models capable of efficiently estimating various types of spatial indicators. In our context, the objective is to jointly exploit satellite images, georeferenced socio-economic data, and various spatialized information to estimate different variables across the entire considered region and ultimately produce comprehensive and accurate maps of vulnerability indicators.

Application procedure

The position is for 2 years starting September 2024 or earlier. The gross annual salary is �31,500-34,000 depending on experience and includes a benefits package (health insurance plus retirement and unemployment benefits). Le Bassin de la Veyre : Un observatoire de l'eau en Auvergne_老虎机游戏

Suite aux tests de t��l��communication des n?uds Solo (n?uds communicants ConnecSenS pour des capteurs) avec des passerelles nouvellement install��es autour du lac d��Aydat, un d��ploiement de dix pluviom��tres a eu lieu sur l��ensemble du bassin versant de la Veyre (voir carte des positions des diff��rents pluviom��tres). L��installation d��un tel dispositif est associ��e au projet d��Observatoire de l'eau en territoire volcanique financ�� dans le cadre du p?le de recherche sur l��eau du Label d��Excellence I-SITE CAP2025.

Ces pluviom��tres, raccord��s �� des n?uds Solo, ont ��t�� positionn��s de fa?on �� pouvoir communiquer avec les passerelles install��es sur le bassin versant mais ��galement dans l��objectif de mailler efficacement le territoire. L��objectif d��un tel dispositif est d��tudier l��h��t��rog��n��it�� de la pluviom��trie �� l��chelle d��un bassin versant pr��sentant un gradient altim��trique fort (1400 m �C 400 m) ainsi que des ph��nom��nes m��t��orologiques locaux marqu��s (pluies orographiques, effet de Foehn).

La caract��risation spatialis��e des pr��cipitations va permettre d��am��liorer la compr��hension de l��hydrologie du bassin versant qui alimente le lac d��Aydat ainsi que les processus de recharge des aquif��res volcaniques de la cheire de la Veyre. En compl��ment des pluviom��tres et des instruments d��j�� en place autour du lac d��Aydat (AyData), d��autres capteurs (AqueTROLL) vont ��tre d��ploy��s dans un futur proche afin de suivre plusieurs cours d��eau sur le bassin versant. Ces installations utiliseront ��galement des n?uds Solo et les passerelles existantes.

Un tel projet d��instrumentation sur une surface de quelque 70 km? est peu commun et a pour objectif de servir de preuve de concept op��rationnelle susceptible d��tre dupliqu��e et adapt��e �� diff��rents territoires. L��laboration d��un syst��me d��observations des eaux int��grant l��ensemble du continuum pr��cipitations/eaux de surface/eaux souterraines doit permettre de r��pondre aux enjeux environnementaux concernant la pr��servation de la ressource en eau, tant en terme de qualit�� que de quantit��, face aux changement climatiques.

Magnetron Sputtering (MS) is a low-pressure plasma-based process. It is a mature, industry-relevant, technique for depositing functional thin films, even on large substrates such as architectural glasses. During MS, plasma ions are accelerated towards the cathode surface by applying an electrical potential. The ion bombardment provokes the sputtering, i.e., the ejection of surface atoms. Sputtered atoms are then transported through the plasma and condense on neighboring surfaces and form a film whose thickness can be controlled with nanometer precision.

In this presentation, we will explain what are the available ��knobs�� for controlling the plasma characteristics and the physico-chemical properties of the deposited thin films.

MS offers the possibility to design thin film with chemical compositions ranging from pure metals to alloys, as well as oxides, nitrides or carbide compounds. Depending on the working parameters, the thin films can be amorphous or (poly)crystalline, porous or dense.

Furthermore, we will present advanced MS processes such as Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD), which allows controlling the nanostructure of the films with a high-level of precision, and sputtering onto liquids enabling the production of colloidal suspensions of small nanoparticles.

La spectroscopie Raman, une technique de spectroscopie vibrationnelle, permet d'identifier les mat��riaux en analysant les ��nergies de vibration de leurs liaisons constitutives. Non invasive, elle convient �� tous types d'��chantillons et est de plus en plus utilis��e tant dans la recherche acad��mique que dans l'industrie.
La spectroscopie Raman permet, entre autres :

Le suivi des mat��riaux luminescents pr��sents dans des rev��tements composites polym��res, utilis��s dans des dispositifs �� base de diodes ��lectroluminescentes pour les affichages t��te haute dans les v��hicules automatis��s intelligents ou dans les syst��mes d��affichage en milieu industriel ;
L��analyse de charges inorganiques ou des plastiques des syst��mes ��nerg��tiques tels que les batteries, les piles �� hydrog��ne, les supercondensateurs;
L��identification des causes de la d��gradation de la durabilit�� de ces syst��mes, en r��alisant un suivi spectroscopique au cours de leur fonctionnement.

Des options telles qu��une cellule de temp��rature, un bras t��lescopique et une sonde d��port��e par fibre optique compl��tent cet ��quipement, lui permettant de s��adapter �� diff��rentes configurations et conditions d��analyse possibles.

Cet appareil s��int��gre parfaitement dans les objectifs des plateformes structurantes disponibles sur le site, enrichissant l��arsenal d��outils de caract��risation des mat��riaux par une technique de pointe. Il est rattach�� au service ? Spectroscopies vibrationnelles ? d��UCA Partner. Elodie Petit, assistante ing��nieur CNRS et responsable du service, assure le soutien �� l��utilisation de cet ��quipement, ce qui facilite la r��alisation de prestations internes et externes ainsi que la formation des utilisateurs �� venir. Depuis l��installation de cet ��quipement, les demandes d��analyses ont afflu��, notamment pour l'imagerie haute r��solution permettant d'obtenir des informations tridimensionnelles sur la composition des ��chantillons.

Le financement accord�� par CAM pour un contrat postdoctoral de 18 mois ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour explorer plus en d��tail le potentiel offert par le spectrom��tre Raman (Projet : Microbatteries ��labor��es par technologie laser port�� par Nicolas Batisse). Ce projet vise �� cartographier avec pr��cision la surface et la profondeur des nanomat��riaux constituant les ��lectrodes de microbatteries, que ce soit dans des conditions in situ ou post mortem.

The successful candidate for the tenure-track junior professor position "Socioeconomic analysis of disasters in the South" will be appointed at the CERDI, a joint unit of the IRD, CNRS and Universit�� Clermont Auvergne. The recruitment date for the chair is set for December 1, 2024.

The selected candidate will focus their research on the socioeconomic analysis of disasters in the South. The ISite CAP 20-The ISite CAP 20-25, a research program of the Universit�� Clermont Auvergne, funds this research in the framework of the "International Research Center of Disaster Science and Sustainable Development" and the Labex IDGM+.

The appointed candidate will study the economic repercussions of natural disasters and will cooperate with our local research partners. They will contribute a maximum of 28 hours of teaching per year in the International Development Graduate Track (IDGT).

The contract.?The postdoctoral researcher will benefit from a 12-month contract, preferably starting September 1, 2024. The funding also includes a �5,000 research allowance. The gross annual salary is �31,500-34,000 depending on experience and includes a benefits package (health insurance plus retirement and unemployment benefits).

The project.?The ��INEG_RISQUE�� project aims to carry out an in-depth analysis of the role of economic inequalities, at both national and local levels, in risk perception, confidence in risk management actors, and the level of preparedness and resilience of populations in the face of natural disasters. Drawing on the expertise of two research laboratories in economics (CERDI) and psychology (LAPSCO), the first part of the project involves an in-depth exploration of major international databases to identify factors of interest. This phase��s novelty lies in using a variety of income distribution indicators. Beyond the commonly used Gini coefficient and other known inequality indicators, the study will also consider polarization, which reflects the concentration of income at the extremes of the economic spectrum accompanied by a shrinking middle class (Wolfson, 1994, Esteban & Ray, 1994; Permanyer, 2018), with the help of bipolarization indices (e.g. Bresson, Kozny, & Yalonetzky, 2023). The second part of the project (2nd year) adopts a confirmatory approach and plans to carry out agent-based numerical simulations based on the findings from the first part of the project.

Your role. The postdoctoral researcher recruited will take part in the development of the first part of the INEG_RISQUE project. Task 1 will be to collect and consolidate several international databases integrating information on natural catastrophic events (e.g., the Emergency Events Database (EMDAT) from the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, https://www.emdat.be/), socio-economic factors (e.g., World Bank datasets, notably from the Poverty and Inequality Platform (https://pip.worldbank.org/home) and its Statistics On Line (SOL) tool), cultural and psychological factors (e.g., the World Risk Poll from Lloyd��s Register Foundation, https://wrp.lrfoundation.org.uk/data-resources). Once identified and acquired, the databases will be consolidated as far as possible into a single, unified database. Task 2 will involve conducting analyses on the database created in order to assess the relationships?between the level of economic inequality in a given country or locality and various outcomes linked to risk perception, confidence in the information provided by decision-makers or risk management bodies, and the level of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. The postdoc will be expected to publish the research findings in international generalist peer-reviewed journals in economics or psychological and behavioral sciences, as well as interdisciplinary journals of disaster science. The postdoc is also expected to present the results at major conferences. The results will also be disseminated to researchers from both laboratories involved and to the International Research Centre of Disaster Science and Sustainable Development (UCA).

The ideal candidate. The ideal candidate holds a PhD in economics with a strong background in data analysis, excellent written and spoken communication skills (in English), a strong interest in disaster events. The ideal candidate is also expected to be very well-trained in R and Stata and to be familiar with distributional issues. Finally, the ideal candidate is also enthusiastic about interdisciplinary collaborations within the large spectrum of Disaster Science.

Our lab. The CERDI is a research center on international development established in 1976. At that time, it was the first joint unit between the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) and a French university dedicated to development economics. The CERDI gathers around 35 scholars from the CNRS, the IRD (French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development), and faculty from the Universit�� Clermont Auvergne. Our economists are working on the macroeconomic and microeconomic aspects of economic development. The publications and expertise of the members of the CERDI cover all the aspects of economic development: the engines of growth along with the social, economic, and environmental consequences of development. Key research areas are i) sustainable development paths, ii) development financing, and iii) the integration of developing economies into the world economy. The successful applicant will be based in and have access to all research facilities of the CERDI, including its technical support and funding schemes. Additional funds can be solicited. While no teaching duties are attached to the position, postdoctoral research associates may participate in the teaching program if mutually agreed.

Professor, Soil Biogeochemistry and Fertility/ co-director, Center of Soil Biogeochemistry and Microbial Ecology / University of New Hampshire

There is an urgent need to increase yields in agroecosystems while? minimizing environmental impacts of nitrogen fertilization, such as trace gas emissions and water pollution. Soil organic nitrogen is key to this goal. It is a massive pool of nitrogen, and a sink for inorganic fertilizer inputs that cycle through microbial biomass. But, the question remains, how do we both accumulate soil carbon and simultaneously mobilize soil organic matter-derived nitrogen to reduce inorganic fertilizer inputs? Here I will examine this problem, using data from my own and others research programs and integrating these data into conceptual models.

Specifically, I will:
1. Establish a framework showing mechanisms to augment soil organic carbon, detailing the pools and processes facilitating its accumulation.
2. Show the role of synergistic interactions among plants, minerals, and microbes in enhancing efficient nitrogen uptake from specific ?reservoirs.

3. Integrate the relationship between soil carbon storage and bioavailable nitrogen mobilization to explore how we can balance production goals with environmental quality.
